Wananga around Whakapapa and History of Whatuiapiti with rangitahi and kapa haka

40 Rangitahi and 10 Pakeke from Poneke and Ngati Kahungunu over 2 days.

Story of the Event:

On an overcast but warm morning, 40 Rangitahi travelled to the Marae at Pukehou for a cultural experience. The activities started with the Rangitahi meeting Kaumatua, greeting one another with the traditional Hongi. Community Leaders within the Marae gave talks on the history of the area and the Whakapapa.

After the talks ended, the Rangitahi came together to give a riveting Kapa Haka performance as a sign of appreciation for the lessons that were imparted.

Cultural Significance:

The meeting of Rangitahi and Whanau at the Marae was an opportunity to pass along and sustain cultural knowledge and heritage of the area. Learning history and where you came from helps to develop a strong sense of self identity. A stronger sense of identity and cultural connection leads to confidence to take action.
